Health and Wellness Standards, HW
Below is the link to the reviewed/revised/reformatted standards for what, in the current Accreditation Process Guide, are the Health and Wellness Standards (HW).
What’s Different?
- OLD/New HW-6 Health Exams: Now asks for the camp to assess the need for a health exam based on their program and clientele.
- OLD/New HW-16 Health Care Center: The requirement for a lockable storage system for medication is now included in HW-20.
- OLD HW-20/CURRENT HW-19 Medication, Storage, and Administration: Added “storage” to this standard. Also now includes the requirement for the protocols for an RN to dispense medication.
- OLD HW-3/CURRENT HW- 11 Health Care Policies/Procedures: Areas that were covered by other standards are no longer included in this standard.
- OLD HW-12/CURRENT HW-13 Treatment Procedures: This standard has been significantly re-worded.
What’s Gone?
- HW-6 Health Exams: No longer required for campers or staff unless determined to be necessary by camp operator.
- Reference to staff in any of the standards regarding health history, permission to treat, or contact information has been separated into standards dealing only with staff.
What’s New?
- All staff health information, permission to treat, etc. is now included in separate standards (necessary due to employment concerns).
Please note: Once all revisions/reformatting have been completed, all standards will be assigned the appropriate number.

Hw20 new HW 19
I think i am reading this that the medications are to be dispensed under the specfic directions of a licensed phycian or RN. Are we just adding RN to the person who can prescribe the medication or treatment?
If that is the case, which i hope it is because i can't imagine all camps having a nurse or highter on camp to distribute medications all day long.
I would include all medical professionals. We have had issues with holistic medicines and practioners and they are becoming more popular.
RN
Did anyone get an answer on whether or not meds had to be dispensed by an RN versus an LPN, EMT, etc
HW-19
Does this mean that we have to hire an RN for medication administration or that RN licensure is the minimum certification for someone that adminsters meds? We are a non-profit camp and this will seriously impact our camp financially.
I have 2 LPN's that have been with me for 5 years or more.

New HW-19
What does having an RN to dispense medication mean? Only an RN will be able to give out over the counter drugs, or under an RN's supervision? Please clarify.
HW-25 (formerly HW-23) and HW-27 (A)
Emergency Care whether it be adult or youth is the topic of both of these standards, it would seem that with a bit of wording change they could be combined. Both, having the same topic, require the same camp analization, the same determination whether camp or user group and the same notification to the user group if that is the camps decision
HW-25
There are two HW-25's but no HW-26
HW-19
The requirement for "written" states; "Y for #4", should this be "Y for #D"
HW-2 and HW-25 (formerly HW-23)
HW-2 requires consideration of 3 different levels of first aid certification depending on the response time for emergency medical system but the part "B" for HW-25 (Youth Groups) only requires basic first aid no matter the timing of emergency response.
