First founded in 1909 as Blake Camp, William
McKay Blake of Minneapolis used the slice of
paradise now known as Camp Lincoln, as a reward
for boys who achieved stringent academic goals
throughout the year at The Blake School in Hopkins,
MN . Even then, the commitment to providing quality
skill development while learning to appreciate
the beauty of the natural world and develop valuable
relationships was strong.
In 1918, Blake Camp was fortunate
to have a couple of students from Carleton College
on the staff. One of them was Brownie Cote, who
developed a passion and belief in the unique
opportunities to be found in a quality camp experience.
In 1922, Brownie purchased the camps and thus
began a long career of camping excellence. The
camp's name was changed to Camp Lincoln; and
in 1927 a picturesque piece of property on the
south side of Lake Hubert was purchased with
the intent of opening a sister camp to Camp Lincoln.
Camp Lake Hubert for Girls quickly followed suit
in its reputation of excellence and dedication
to the development of youth.
In the process, Brownie hired two young men
to help in his mission: Chuck Everett and Fred
Rogers. Together, these three men forged a partnership
that would endure for more than half a century
and developed a nationally recognized camping
program serving young people from around the
world. Without a doubt, the commitment and loyalty
of so many youth leaders, program specialists,
and operations staff over the years past and
present, is legendary.
While the program offerings are more plentiful
today (with more than 30 land and water activities),
the core values remain the same: building a strong
and respectful community, striving for excellence
in work and play, fostering personal growth and
development, having fun, and creating meaningful
friendships spanning the globe. For almost one
hundred years, Camp Lincoln for Boys and Camp
Lake Hubert for Girls have brought children together
to celebrate nature, one another, and themselves.
As the family of Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert
grows, it is in this spirit that we look forward
to our next 100 years!
