Wyonegonic Camps

Denmark, Maine
Established: 1902
Camp Details

Wyonegonic was founded by CE Cobb in 1902. He was an educator and had operated a camp for boys. He decided women should have the same opportunity to experience the outdoors. In 1908, CE Cobb started Winona, a boys camp on the same lake. Today the brother/sister camps are managed under separate ownership. CE Cobb had twin sons and Roland was the second generation of Cobbs to run Wyonegonic; and twin Phil, Winona. George and Carol Sudduth purchased Wyonegonic from the Cobbs in 1969. The philosophy and traditional program remained but much more emphasis was placed on tripping. A challenge and adventure course was also added. George Sudduth died in 1991, and the camps have continued under the directorship of his wife Carol and her oldest son Steven. In 2001, Wyonegonic was the first girls camp in the United States to celebrate her 100th season.
