Meeting the Emerging Needs of Schools - Is Your Camp Ready for Environmental Literacy Plans?

Many schools are interested in boosting student outcomes related to environmental literacy. Is your camp prepared to engage these schools? This webinar will address current environmental literacy initiatives in the U.S., discuss the needs of K-12 schools relative to environmental education and environmental literacy; explore methods and strategies that camps can utilize to align and partner with schools, and examine the components of a typical environmental literacy plan.
Through this webinar, participants will learn:
- state-specific initiatives related to environmental literacy,
- basic components of an environmental literacy plan,
- strategies for getting involved in the environmental literacy movement,
- ways that camps can engage with schools for year-round learning.
Tom Neppl is a licensed Landscape Architect with a professional and academic interest in environmental design and outdoor education. In practice, he works with camps and outdoor centers nationwide in the development of environmentally sensitive master plans of their programs, sites and facilities. As a lecturer at Iowa State University, he teaches design studio courses with a focus on environmental design in the built environment. Tom speaks regularly at regional and national camp conferences. He is an active member of the ACA, serving as the Co-Chair of ACA Great Rivers, as a member of the ACA’s Children, Nature and Camps Committee, and as a recent member of the Task Force on the Local Council of Leaders. Tom studied at Kansas State University where he received a Bachelor’s in Agriculture and a Master’s in Landscape Architecture and Regional and Community Planning.
Laura Downey, Ph.D. is the Executive Director for the Kansas Association for Conservation and Environmental Education (KACEE). A former Chicago Public School Teacher, Laura has a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education, a Master’s in Administration and Supervision and a Doctorate from Kansas State in Curriculum and Instruction for Math, Science and Technology. In 1998, Laura joined the staff with KACEE and currently serves as the Executive Director for the organization. KACEE is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization with the mission of promoting and providing quality, non-biased and science-based conservation and environmental education for all Kansans. Laura is actively involved with the Affiliates Network for the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE), Project Learning Tree, the National Science Teachers Association and has served a board member for the Council for Elementary Science International.
