Managing Parental Fears
PRESENTER: Michael Thompson, Ph.D.
COST: ACA members: $35, Non-Members: $70
The present generation of parents is loving and conscientious, but also very anxious: fearful on behalf of their children and anxious about their own parental decision-making. Sending a child off to camp for the first time can stir up strong feelings of parental worry that a camp director has to help manage. In this presentation, Dr. Thompson will discuss the unrealistic hopes and fears of parents, and the best techniques for helping them to manage the intense feelings stirred up by being away from their child.
Through this webinar participants will:
- Learn to distinguish between normal parental worries and the fears of parents who may suffer from depression and anxiety disorders.
- Learn techniques for addressing anxiety other than reassurance, which is typically ineffective with the most anxious parents.
- Learn the power of asking parents about their hopes and fears.
Michael Thompson, Ph.D. is a psychologist, family therapist and school and camp consultant.
