Scaling Social Impact: Camp's Role as a Social Enterprise

Now more than ever, camps are called to develop moral young leaders who will make the right decisions when they matter most. Camps are social enterprises. Social enterprises are society’s change agents. In this webinar, we will define the core concepts of Social Enterprise and you will learn how camps can – and must -- be a powerful force for change. By the end of the webinar, participants will learn core concepts of what it means to be a social enterprise, the role that camp can play in creating positive social change, steps to maximize social impact and build leaders of consequence, information about other camps’ social enterprise initiatives, and steps for implementing similar programs.
Kevin Trapani, The Redwoods Group
Kevin Trapani is an experienced, practicing social entrepreneur and a powerful speaker. Imprinted at a young age with the teaching that to whom much is given, much is expected, Kevin intentionally thinks and acts in fundamentally different ways, holding up business as a powerful force for positive social change. This mentality helped Kevin shape The Redwoods Group in 1997. Today, Redwoods is a social enterprise dedicated to insuring and protecting YMCAs, nonprofit resident camps, Jewish Community Centers, Jewish Family Services and Jewish Federations. As president and chief executive officer, Kevin leads a non-traditional insurance operation. The innovative Redwoods model turns everyday insuring operations into efforts that positively impact society and places “serve others” as it primary mission. This model positions Redwoods as a mission aligned, rather than a commoditized, insurance provider for its customers. And its positive impact has been felt in critical social areas such as child sexual abuse, drowning prevention, and transportation safety, among others. Kevin is the president of The Redwoods Group Foundation and also serves on the boards of the following organizations: the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation, which makes grants to local, statewide and regional nonprofits in the Southeastern US that have track records of helping low-wealth people build assets and transform economic conditions in their communities; the University of North Carolina’s Center for International Understanding, which helps Triangle leaders better serve the needs of Latino immigrants; and the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions at Duke University. He is serving as the Chair of the 2011 CEO Build for Habitat of Wake County and Chair of the 2012 Triangle Wide CEO Build.
Kent Meyer, YMCA of the Rockies
Kent Meyer is the President and CEO of the YMCA of the Rockies. The YMCA of the Rockies is made up of two year-round family resorts and conference centers and a traditional overnight summer camp for teens. The Y is dedicated to changing lives through building and strengthening relationships. This commitment, shared by guests, staff, volunteers and donors is focused on youth development, healthy living and fostering social responsibility. The YMCA of the Rockies is committed to diversity and respect for all people by utilizing more than 50,000 volunteer hours every year, hosting more than 2,500 outdoor education students to instill in them stewardship of our earth, promoting global awareness through the international trainee program and supporting the Chaplains Departments’ religious education programming for youth and adults. Additionally, the Y endeavors to operate its centers in an earth-friendly fashion with active recycling programs, sustainable architecture in new construction and active natural resource management plans. Kent started at the YMCA of the Rockies and 1986, and became the President and CEO in 2001. He is active in the community and holds several board positions, including: Grand County Colorado Tourism Board (President), Winter Park Chamber of Commerce (President), Vacation Kidney Center Board and SMaRT Therapeutic Riding Center Board.
Peg Smith, ACA
Peg Smith, with twenty-six years experience working with children, youth, and families, is widely recognized for her entrepreneurial work style and organizational capacity—and her ability to move people, organizations, and government agencies through significant change. She began her career in 1974 as a Head Start teacher and in 1977 became the director of the Head Start program for Child Adult Resource Services. Peg served in this position until 1989 when she was asked to be the director of the Children’s Division for Child Adult Resource Services. In 1991, Peg joined the staff of the Office of the Governor of Indiana as the director of the Governor's Step Ahead initiative. Peg became the executive director of the Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) in 1995. In 1998, Peg became the chief executive officer of the American Camp Association. Born and raised in Indiana, Peg has a B.S. in early childhood and family studies and a master's degree in management.
Terry Buchanan, National Military Family Association
Terry is responsible for management and direction of the Operation Purple® program that includes summer camps for military children of the deployed, family retreats for military families experiencing the challenges of reunion and reintegration following deployment, and specialized family camps for the wounded and their families. She identifies and promotes various military children and family initiatives and serves as a subject matter expert on issues related to mental health and deployment issues impacting military children and families. She developed and implemented the U.S. Navy’s New Parent Support Team Program, championed joint collaboration and has served on numerous boards and committees including United Way, Healthcare-related facilities, legal affiliations, and numerous advisory panels and community groups. Terry brings broad experience as a former military senior spouse, mother, and military family law resource and volunteer to her current position.
