These courses highlight the importance of preventative behaviors and practices for camps. These four mini-courses target prevention strategies that camps can use to reduce the likelihood of camper and staff injuries and illness. Staff are encouraged to complete all seven trainings, but can also participate in individual trainings in the series. The series covers Building Community, Setting Rules and Expectations, Leading Activities, Managing a Group Outdoors, Field Trips 101, Handling Transitions between Activities, and Activity Planning. Each of OOSA's online trainings include fun, narrated, interactive presentation with quizzes, handouts and a discussion forum. Participants who successfully complete a training (with a passing score of 70% on the quizzes) are eligible to receive a certificate of completion. This online course provides critical information for directors and frontline staff on the process of reporting possible child abuse and neglect, including an overview of types of abuse and neglect and possible indicators. Sexual Abuse Awareness Training is a foundational piece of any effort to prevent sexual abuse at camp. A new Endorsed Program from ACA, this training by MinistrySafe is valuable for camp administration as well as staff and volunteers who interact with campers. This training will dispel commonly-held misconceptions about sexual abuse while providing accurate information regarding abuser characteristics, the process by which abusers groom children and gatekeepers, common grooming behaviors, the importance of reporting to supervisors and law enforcement and much more. This training was created specifically for camp use. (CECs = 1.0)
U.S. EPA SunWise Program
If you work with youth outdoors, take EPA's free, award-winning online sun safety certification program. The interactive training provides you with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to instill life-long sun-safe behaviors in the youth in your care. At the end of the training, you will be able to 1) identify the negative health effects of UV exposure; 2) understand what the UV Index is, and how to use it; 3) identify at least five ways to enjoy being outdoors without getting excess UV exposure; and 4) understand how to model sun-safe behavior for the children in your care. (CECs=1.0)
