Seeing ACA Through a 20/20 Lens

Peg Smith keynote address at the 2008 ACA National ConferencePeg Smith, CEO of the American Camp Association, delivered the closing keynote address at the 2008 ACA National Conference in February. Her presentation was dynamic, introducing the 20/20 Vision for the Association and rallying the audience under a common cause. She pointed out that "we can reach the goals of 20 million children going to camp and 20,000 supporters and members by the year 2020 if we all use the strength of our many voices." She made a compelling call to action for all of us. Watch the keynote address now.

Take Advantage of New Membership Renewal Alternatives

Don't forget! ACA's new individual membership structure and rates go into effect July 1! With the exception of student memberships, all membership dues rates will change.

The new membership system will make all member products and services available to all members. Individual membership dues will be $200. Three groups will be able to join with a discounted member rate: visitors can join at $95, retirees at $60, and students at $35.

Depending on how your dues are affected, you may wish to extend your current membership until June 30. If your membership expires between now and June 30, 2008, and you'd like to extend your membership expiration date to take advantage of your current rate, you may call Rachel Williams at 765-342-8456, ext. 509, or send an e-mail to membership@ACAcamps.org and ask for that extension. If you prefer to renew your membership based on your current expiration date, you're welcome to do that, and no change to your record is necessary.

If you're curious about your renewal date, or have specific questions about how the change will impact your dues or services, be sure to contact Rachel Williams at membership@ACAcamps.org.

Child Protection Bill Introduced in U.S. House and Senate

On March 13, the Child Protection Improvements Act of 2008 was introduced by Senators Joseph Biden (D-DE); Orrin Hatch (R-UT); and Arlen Specter (R-PA). The bill will make permanent a child protection pilot program that allows youth-serving organizations to run FBI background checks on prospective volunteers and employees.

The American Camp Association (ACA) has been working for the past two years—along with other organizations, primarily MENTOR/The National Mentoring Partnership—to develop the content and specific text of the bill. It is because of ACA's work and the work of its partners in Washington, D.C. that this bill was supported by Senator Biden and introduced in Congress. The bill was also introduced the same day in the House by Rep Adam Schiff (D-CA).

For more information about the legislation, contact Susan Yoder at ACA, 800-428-2267, ext. 302, or e-mail syoder@ACAcamps.org.

NEW Material on ACA's Camp Regulations by State Web Site

Curious about wage issues and how they influence the camp community? ACA is proud to announce our newest addition to our Camp Regulation by State Web Site. Information regarding minimum wage, exemptions, overtime pay requirements, and more can now be found online.

A complete database of information about the camp-related regulations in each state is available on the ACA Web site. The data provides active links to the regulations and information in each state. Sortable by state, a viewer can compare all fifty states (and D.C. and Puerto Rico). Additionally, the database can indicate whether the state allows FBI records checks and information on how to access driving checks in each state, including costs and links to request forms.

ACA routinely checks the links and information supplied on this database to ensure accuracy. For more information, contact Phil Frazier at 800-428-2267, ext. 307.
