Communicating Internally
ACA Needs You!

Communicating Internally

As you develop your proactive PR strategies, one audience you want to be careful not to overlook is your internal audience. Sometimes we become so focused on "getting the word out" to the media and potential campers that we inadvertently set aside our current friends and campers.

Many camps may already distribute a newsletter or e-newsletter to alumni and current campers. This is an excellent way to touch base with them throughout the year. Through newsworthy and useful content, you can convey an enormous amount of information. This is an opportunity to give regular updates on changes in facilities or policies, updated registration information, important reminders for camp sessions, and introduce new staff.

The ACA Web site is another resource for newsletter content. The ACA Media Center includes press releases, story ideas, articles for reprint from Camping Magazine, and a photo gallery. For those distributing e-newsletters, there are also links to Peg Smith’s 20/20 Vision Blog, Public Service Announcements, and the new Change a Life video.

Expert advice is also available for your use on the ACA parent Web site at www.CampParents.org. Information by age group, informative articles, and additional links enhance newsletter content with relevant, useful guidance from experts within the camp community.

The ACA Research page can also offer interesting tid-bits that you may want to share. If you are including an update on camp policy, research data from ACA could serve as a nice side bar or text box. For example, if your camp is offering vegetarian meal options for the first time, you could mention that in a recent ACA survey, seventy-six percent of camps are now offering these options.

In addition to newsletter content, the ACA Public Relations team is always available to discuss ways to communicate to your internal audience, PR strategies, or just serve as a sounding board for questions, ideas, and concerns.

For more information on reprinting articles and information from the ACA Web site, contact Dawn Swindle, Public Relations Specialist, at dswindle@ACAcamps.org or 765-349-3317.

ACA Needs You!
As part of the national public relations plan, we will be working to identify new positive camp stories and new resources for the media. In the last year, ACA received over 300 media requests. We would like to expand our media resource list to include more camps and more voices who can share with the media the depth, breadth, and importance of the camp experience. With your help, ACA can influence print and broadcast stories that appear throughout the country. If you would like to join the ACA Media Resource Team, or if you have any questions, please submit our online form or contact Public Relations at 765-349-3317
