American Camp Association Explore 30 Camp Reading Program Serving Over 345,000 Youth

Indianapolis, IN (May 19, 2011) – This summer, the American Camp Association® (ACA) is proud to launch the Explore 30 Camp Reading Program nationwide, providing over 345,000 youth with at least thirty minutes of reading time per day.

During the summer children experience “summer learning loss” when they are not involved in high quality programs with opportunities for skill building. Research indicates that participation in intentional programs, like camp, can help stem summer learning loss.

“We are very excited about the launch of Explore 30,” said Peg Smith, ACA’s chief executive officer. “For 150 years, camps have been a natural extension of traditional education - providing not only experiential education opportunities, but also providing developmental growth, which is a precursor to academic achievement.”

Explore 30 is a FREE program involving a variety of camps and other youth development organizations interested in starting either a formal or informal reading program. Camps that sign up have the opportunity to join in advocacy efforts to increase the recognition of and support for the value of the camp experience as a vital component in the development and education of the whole child.

ACA has partnered with Sesame Workshop, Hatchette, Penquin Young Readers, Candlewick, and Balzer & Bray (HarperCollins) to provide free reading resources to program participants. Other partners have provided discounts on reading-related products and services.

There are currently 187 camps from 36 states participating in the Explore 30 program. For more information on the program, visit ACA’s Web site at To join Explore 30 as a partner, visit
