ACA Press Statement - Camp-related Television Programs

The American Camp Association® (ACA) is aware of two new programs debuting on television—Camp (NBC) with a story line about a family camp and Summer Camp (USA Network) which is a reality competition series.

Although the ACA appreciates the exposure these shows might bring to the camp experience, we caution parents to understand that these programs are intended to serve as entertainment only.  The story lines and the actions depicted in the program may likely not be consistent with the values of camps, the camp community, and ACA in particular.

We encourage all parents to research a camp’s standards and accreditation status.  ACA Accreditation means that the camp has undergone a thorough (up to 290 standards) review of its operation — from staff qualifications and training to emergency management. ACA collaborates with experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red Cross, and other youth-service agencies to assure that current practices at camp reflect the most up-to-date, research-based standards in camp operation.

Camps and ACA form a partnership that promotes growth and positive youth development in an environment committed to safety.
