New Television Programs Related to Camp

The American Camp Association® (ACA) is aware of two new programs debuting on television—Camp (NBC) with a story line about a family camp and Summer Camp (USA Network) which is a reality competition series.

ACA appreciates that the entertainment business often exaggerates everyday events in order to capture an audience. Although these shows may bring exposure, albeit possibly unwanted exposure, to the camp experience, please caution parents to understand that these programs are intended to serve as entertainment only.  The story lines and the actions depicted in the program are likely not consistent with the values of camps, the camp community, and ACA, in particular.

We encourage you to suggest that your parents research a camp’s standards and accreditation status (CampParents.org). ACA accreditation means that the camp has undergone a thorough (up to 290 standards) review of its operation — from staff qualifications and training to emergency management. ACA collaborates with experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red Cross, and other youth-service agencies to assure that current practices at camp reflect the most up-to-date, research-based standards in camp operation.

Camps and ACA form a partnership that promotes growth and positive youth development in an environment committed to safety.
