Skillful screening procedures, overseen by trained individuals, are an important element in the creation of a safe environment for children's programs and services. An applicant with inappropriate sexual motives carries various indicators and life patterns which help identify him/her as one who may not be appropriate for work with children or students. Skillful screening training arms intake coordinators and interviewers with the information and tools to recognize high-risk responses on applications, reference forms, or during an interview. The process is relatively simple, once learned, but very effective. It's designed for individuals involved in the hiring or screening process, but is valuable for ALL individuals working in children's programs. Because employees relocate periodically, it is important to equip more than one person per organization or entity with this training.

When the Going Gets Tough . . . The Tough Get Real
Join Chris Thurber, Scott Arizala, and Steve Maguire for a pre-conference workshop all about getting real. Professional directing demands that we face difficult real-world circumstances with skill and grace. Learn to deal with real mental health problems (suicidality, cutting, eating disorders), real management tasks (giving feedback, firing staff) and real leadership challenges (promoting stamina, providing superior training). This practical and fast-paced workshop will force you to clean the fluff out of your professional toolbox and stock it full of heavy-duty tools that help you get down and dirty in the real-world business of directing. Includes a break and lunch (sponsored by Spikeball).

Enjoy lunch with others from the nonprofit camp “world” to discuss current issues, share successes, and learn more about the research being funded by the Not-for-Profit Council. Over the years, a variety of tools have been developed from this research that are of particular value to those camps needing to document outcomes for potential funders. The current research focuses on the development of an “easy to use” youth outcomes reporting tool that documents observations by staff (and potentially parents) to help with this critical aspect of camp.
