Impact of the Verna Summer Camp on the State-Trait Anxiety, Asthma Knowledge and Self Concept in a Group of Puerto Rican Asthmatic Children

Purpose:
Determine how a summer camp program designed to teach children self management of asthma impacted the anxiety, asthma knowledge and self-concept of the participants.
Sample:
42 children, ages 9-12, attending a special camp in Puerto Rico.
Methods/Instruments:
Quasi-experimental time series design, data was collected at the beginning of camp, at the end of camp, and three months following the end of camp. Spanish translation of the Piers-Harris Children's Self Concept Scale and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children, Asthma Knowledge Scale, parent questionnaire.
Results:
- Significant increase in asthma knowledge.
- Significant increase in self-esteem scores.
- There were no significant changes in state-trait anxiety.
