From an early age, children adopt beliefs about what boys or girls should do and like – from pink blankets for baby girls to sports equipment for little boys. Youth come to your program having already received years of messages about what is “right” for girls or boys. Does your program help expand youths’ beliefs about their opportunities and responsibilities? Is your program part of the solution to the limitations posed by sexist stereotypes faced by both boys and girls? In this webinar, we will examine program practices that reinforce, resist, and relieve gender stereotypes. We will discuss ways to create a more gender-inclusive environment that will promote positive youth development for all of your youth. Participants in this webinar will critically examine and evaluate attitudes and beliefs about gender, learn to distinguish between program practices that reinforce, resist, and relieve gender stereotypes, and identify actions that will create a more gender inclusive environment for youth.
Ann Gillard, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Youth Development at Springfield College, Massachusetts. Ann teaches courses related to social justice, programming, and service learning. Ann directed Girl Scout camps for six summers, and has worked and volunteered with youth-serving organizations and agencies for over 14 years. Her current research focuses on program evaluation, youth with HIV/AIDS, mindfulness in staff, and gender.
