Independent camps have been leaders in the camp industry since the inception of that great American tradition — the camp experience. Since 1954, the private camp committee, under the chairmanship of Fred Rogers, has been an organized group under various names and leaders. In 1996, the Association of Independent Camps (AIC) was separately incorporated, under the auspices of ACA, and has served the independent camp community as a legal vehicle since that time.
In early February 2013, the AIC Board of Directors voted to dissolve the AIC Inc. entity and create an independent, separate incorporated body — CODA.
ACA voted not to dissolve AIC but understands the former board of AIC is creating a new, separate, independent association.
The American Camp Association, as always, serves the independent camp community and its ACA members. To that point, ACA provides such services as:
- Accreditation and public credibility 
- Camper scholarship programs  for your campers (and providing tax deductions for your donors)
