Cultural Experience and Life-Long Friends
I was lucky enough to be both a camper, as well as a staff member, at International Sports Training Camp (ISTC). As a camper, I used to look forward to attending ISTC every summer because, among many other things, it meant getting a taste of something different! Making the decision to go back and work at ISTC is still, to this day, the best decision I've ever made.
As an American 21-year old, I was very excited to have the opportunity to work in such a positive atmosphere that combined so many different cultures and people. Not only did I have the opportunity to learn so much about so many, but I met my best and closest friends there. Connecting with so many people from around the world made my positive camp experience even more memorable and special.
It is so important for summer camps to be able to staff internationally because it gives staff, as well as campers, the opportunity to see what life is like outside of their own countries. Foreign staff members have the chance to explore what America has to offer in so many ways, while American staff and campers can both learn from their international peers, as well as have the chance to show them parts of their own culture.
I will never forget my experiences with all of the international staff and hope that campers and staff in the future will have the same opportunities and amazing adventures that I was lucky enough to experience!
