Calling All Camps! ACA, AT&T, and Cell Phones for Soldiers Invite You to a Community Service Challenge . . . .

ACA is excited to answer a challenge from AT&T and Cell Phones for Soldiers (CPFS). Beginning this summer, we are launching cell phone recycling drives through ACA with AT&T and CPFS*.

Your campers, who are enjoying the environment and learning leadership skills at camp, will have the opportunity compete in a service project contest to see who can:

  • Create the most environmentally-friendly cell phone recycle bin;
  • Design the most creative cell phone recycling bins; and/or
  • Collect the most used cell phones from their communities.

Note: Each camp can choose the contest area(s) in which they will compete — one, two, or all three.

This is the perfect Fourth of July holiday activity for your camper families and your camp community because as a result of your efforts, CPFS will be able to provide even more U.S. servicemen and servicewomen serving overseas with free phone cards to stay in touch with their families. ACA will provide your camp with an activity sheet to assist with this project.

This service project contest starts on May 1, 2009, and will end at 11:59 p.m. on July 24, 2009. Your camp can start collecting cell phones and accessories the day your campers start arriving. Send a message to your camp families and post in community bulletins asking for donated cell phones to be dropped off at your camp this summer through July 24. The goal of this project is to collect the most cell phones than any other ACA camp.

AT&T and CPFS have challenged ACA camps to design environmentally-friendly and creative recycling containers. They know that creativity starts at camp and that your campers are able to think outside of the box.

To enter the contest:

  • Start collecting used cell phones and accessories on May 1, 2009, and/or
  • Get your campers involved in developing a recycling bin for your phone drops
    • Containers must have a slot no larger than 4 in. x 4 in., but large enough for the basic cell phone and/or charger to fit in.
    • Containers should be at least large enough to hold up to approximately 25 units.
    • Containers seeking consideration for the “most environmentally-friendly” award should consist of 50 percent natural or recyclable materials.
    • Containers should be designed with individuality in mind — “think outside the box,” get creative, and develop a one-of-a-kind recycle bin

Collecting cell phones:

  • For camps with no cell phone policies, there are a number of creative ways to weave this program into compliance reminders. (You can’t send phones for camper use, but we are asking that you look around your house for used cell phones and accessories that are gathering dust…and help us on a national effort to reduce e-waste….)
  • Remove cell phones and accessories from your container daily.
  • Batteries must accompany cell phones (No loose batteries as they can leak in your container).
  • If desired, you can provide these links to help camp families strip personal info from phones before donating: www.recyclewirelessphones.com or www.att.com/recyclewireless.
  • Have a secured area where phones can be locked up until you are ready to ship them.
  • Count the phones collected and report them on a tally sheet.
  • Report total cell phone count no later than August 1 to contest@ACAcamps.org.

Grand Prize and other awards:

  • This service project contest will be judged by an approved ACA and AT&T panel.
  • Your container will be judged in the following three categories:
    • Create the most environmentally-friendly recycle bin;
    • Design the most creative cell phone recycling bins; or
    • Collect the most cell phones from their communities. This category will have two subcategories:
      • Up to 100 camp families per summer
      • More than 100 camp families per summer
  • Awards will be given in each category.
  • A Grand Prize will be awarded to the camp that had the best overall participation by July 24 and will include a camp visit from Brittney and Robbie for CPFS after August 1. (They can speak to campers about leadership, giving back to the community, entrepreneurship, e-waste, and other themes.)
  • Grand Prize winner will also be recognized at the ACA 2010 National Conference in Denver, Colorado, February 16-20, 2010.
  • ACA members will be able to vote on their favorite recycle bin starting July 27.
  • Winners will have their containers highlighted in an article about the service project in the November/December issue of Camping Magazine.
  • All winners will be notified by August 1.

When your project is complete:

  • When your recycle bin is complete, send a cropped picture of your container to contest@ACAcamps.org. This is your official entry into the contest.
    • Photos must be uploaded by 11:59 p.m. on July 24.
      • Photos should be at least 150 dpi.
    • Complete the form with your container description, building materials used, and approximate size.
    • Pack and ship your collected cell phones and accessories by July 24 to:
    • Submit your total phone/accessory count to the ACA national office via e-mail to contest@ACAcamps.org.

AT&T sent out the following press release nationwide to all major media markets: http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=4800&cdvn=news&newsarticleid=26749

Let’s work together to help fight e-waste and have fun at the same time. Additional questions can be directed to Kim Bruno, kbruno@ACAcamps.org.

*CPFS is a charity started by two Massachusetts teens that collects and recycles used wireless phones, then uses the proceeds to purchase prepaid phone cards for military members stationed overseas.
