The Effect of Summer Band Camp Experience on Selected Aspects of Musical Competency

Purpose:
Determine if attendance at a one-week summer music camp has a positive effect on participants performance skills, attitude and perceived appropriate use of expressive phrasing.

Sample:
35 high school seniors drawn from a population of 400. Subjects assigned to one of three groups based on instrument (15 woodwind, 15 brass and 5 percussion).

Methods/Instruments:
Watkins-Farnum Performance Scale, Self-Esteem of Musical Ability, revised, Hoffman Test of Expressive Phrasing in Music.

Results:

  • No significant changes in performance ability or perceived appropriate use of expressive phrasing.
  • No significant changes in self-esteem or musical ability.
