A Summer Day Camp to Develop Cultural
Esteem in Youth and Staff.

Purpose:
Determine the effect of a seven-week summer
day camp on cultural pride and self-esteem.
Sample:
18 youth ages 8-14; 49 staff members ages
15-21. Cultural groups included: African
American, Chicano, Filipino, Caucasian,
Samoan, and Guamanian.
Method/Instruments:
Camp Program: included art, music, and
other traditional cultural activities of
the groups represented.
Design: Pre-test/post-test with control
group.
Instruments:
- Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory
- Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory
- Draw-A-Person Test
Data Analysis: ANOVA on Coopersmith and
Rosenberg scales, professional psychologist
raters for Draw-A-Person Test.
Results:
No significant differences between groups
on any of the tests. Researcher attributed
the lack of findings to the fact that the
tests are not designed for cross-cultural
application and small sample size.
