Effects of a summer camp program on
self-concept of mentally retarded young
adults.

Purpose:
Determine the effectiveness of a summer
camp program in enhancing self-concept in
mildly and moderately mentally retarded
young adults.
Sample:
13 mildly and moderately retarded young
adults (7 females, 6 males) and a control
group matched in age, IQ, gender, and background.
Camp Affiliation: Camp LARCee
Methods/Instrumentation:
Camp was a two-week residential summer camp
for the mentally retarded. The camp program
consisted of a variety of structured and
unstructured recreational activities and
evening activities geared toward social
orientation.
Instrument: California Test of Personality,
Primary Level, Forms AA and BB, with scale
scores on Total Adjustment, Personal Adjustment,
and Social Adjustment. Data Analysis:
ANCOVA, using the pre-test as the covariate.
Results:
- Group attending camp experienced significant
(p<.05) gains in self-concept total
adjustment
- Most significant changes occurred in
personal adjustment
- Slight, non-significant gains in social
adjustment
