Shema: Listening to Jewish Youth

Purpose:
Survey of Jewish youth to gain an understanding of their thoughts, feelings and actions in regards to participation in Jewish-sponsored activities.

Sample:
414 of 1114 (37%) of Jewish youth responded to a mail survey. 56% female, 44% male. Most respondents were in grades 7-12.

Methods/Instruments:
Mail survey.

Results:

  • 80% of respondents had attended camp at least once. 71% had attended camp for 3 or more summers.
  • Attendance at Jewish camp positively related to participation in Jewish-sponsored activities.
  • Jewish camp attendance positively related to more meaningful religious experiences.
