Encouraging the Dancing Eyes of Children

Purpose:
Determine if participation in an organized camping program enhances creativity and the factors at camp that have a positive impact on creativity enhancement.

Sample:
74 girls, ages 10-13, predominantly white from middle to upper income families, attending a private girls camp. Over 50% of the sample were returning campers. 15 female counselors, ages 17-24, 10 had previously been campers, CITs or counselors at the camp.

Methods/Instruments:
Demonstrator Form of the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT) and Group Inventory for Finding Creative Talent (GIFT) administered during the first 3 days of camp and at the end of the 7th week. Weekly camper reports by counselors, observations, creative product, Children's Report of Counselor Behavior Inventory (CRCBI), Camper's Report of Counselor's Creative Behavior.

Results:

  • Significant positive change in creative attitudes.
  • Significant positive change in creative thinking skills.
  • No significant correlation between counselor characteristics and change in camper creativity.
  • "81% of the campers perceived their counselors as being accepting of them."
  • "88% of the campers and all 15 of the tent groups perceived their counselors as behaving in creative ways."
  • Recommendations for nurturing camper creativity provided in report.
