The Relationship of Psychological Type to the Sociometric Choices of Junior High Students Involved in a Leadership Camp

Purpose:
Examine the relationship between sociometric choices and psychological orientation, perception and judgment.

Sample:
27 "informal leaders" and 76 "formal leaders" ages 10-15 attending a leadership workshop. Participants were nominated through Student Council Advisors at 17 schools offering 6th, 7th, and 8th grade programs. "Formal leaders" were selected through competitive interviews. "Informal leaders" were selected base on selected criteria regarding disciplinary, disruptive and delinquent behaviors and identification as non-formal leaders by teachers and principals.

Methods/Instruments:
Descriptive research. Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Sociometric questionnaire.

Results:

  • Significant relationship between shared preferences for perception and judgment and sociometric choices.
  • No significant association between extroversion and introversion and sociometric choice.
  • Female subjects preferred intuition and male subjects preferred thinking as a way of forming perceptions and making judgments.
  • No significant differences in psychological preference choices between formal and informal leaders.
  • No significant differences between male formal and informal leaders.
  • Significant difference between female formal and informal leaders in judging-perceiving though not in strength of preference. Female informal leaders preferred judging over perceiving significantly more than female formal leaders.
