Going Green: Save Money & Save the Earth!
Danny Sudman, Green Camps Initiative (GCI)
Explore the topic of "going green", using case studies, examining sustainable products hands-on and undergoing a "green audit." Whether your camp is just starting out or seasoned with implementing green initiatives, has the ability to make a major investment or looking for low and no-cost options, you'll walk away from this session with exciting new ideas for how you can save money, reduce your camp's environmental impact and set an example for the young people you serve. Topics include:
- Energy conservation
- Water conservation
- Waste reduction
- Food systems
- Facility maintenance
Camp has been an important part of Danny Sudman's life since he was nine years old and first attended a YMCA camp in North Carolina. After graduating from North Carolina State University with a degree in Sociology, Danny moved to California to begin working at Catalina Island Camps (CIC) where he continued to grow into the role of a summer camp director as well as a program director for the Catalina Environmental Leadership Program (CELP). Danny's background in summer camping and environmental education has allowed him to develop programs to reach a diverse audience and teach young people valuable critical thinking skills in an effort to better their communities and the environment.
Danny recently launched Green Camps Initiative, an organization that helps camps reduce their environmental impact, regenerate natural systems and become models of environmental stewardship for campers and their surrounding communities.
"This was a very rich opportunity to get information and ideas to improve our services."
~Emilio Hernandez, Loch Leven Christian Camp & Conference Center
"The tour was great, the host camps' staff were terrific. The format at each venue was set up differently and that worked."
~Gabe Valencia, Mile High Pines Camp
"The guest speaker's knowledge of adapting other camps' ideas to our facility was very valuable."
~Leon Felus, Lions Camp at Wrightwood
