Lifeguard Training

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to teach candidates the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare candidates to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drowning s and injuries. To enroll in the Lifeguarding course, you must be at least 15 years of age before the last scheduled class session ( June 6, 2008). To participate in the Lifeguarding course, you must be able to demonstrate the following skills:

  • Swim 300 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order:
    • 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick. Rhythmic breathing can be performed either by breathing to the side or to the front.
    • 100 yards of breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence.
    • 100 yards of either the front crawl or the breaststroke. The 100 yards may be a combination of front crawl and breaststroke.
  • Staring in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute 40 seconds.

Upon successful completion of the Lifeguarding course, each participant will receive an American Red Cross Universal Certificate indicating Lifeguarding/First Aid, which is valid for 3 years, and an American Red Cross Universal Certificate indicating CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, which is valid for 1 year.

Camp Low Country is located just off of Highway 402 in Cordesville, South Carolina, approximately 35 miles west of Charleston.

Lifeguarding and Waterfront Module
(American Red Cross)
Tuesday, May 20 - Friday, May 23
Starting at 8am Tuesday and ending in the evening Friday ET
Strong Rock Camp, Cleveland, GA
Max number: 10

Cost: $260 (Includes 10 meals starting with lunch Tuesday, three nights’ accommodations, training material & certification fee)
Overnight accommodations and one meal for an additional $20 per night

This course provides a complete skills instruction package incorporating equipment based rescues, spinal injury management, post-rescue care, First Aid and CPR training.

PREREQUISITES: Participants must successfully complete a pre-course session consisting of the following: Swim 500 yards continuously using breast stroke, crawl, and sidestroke; tread water for 2 minutes with hands under arm pits, using the legs only; submerge to a depth of 7 feet, retrieve a 10 lb. object and return to surface; swim 25 yards from shallow to deep, pick up a 10 lb brick and return to shallow end.

CERTIFICATION: Participants receive Lifeguarding and Waterfront certification including First-Aid valid for 3 years. They also receive CPR certification valid for 1 year .

Landmark Learning Lifeguard Courses

Wilderness Lifeguard Training

This Wilderness StarGuard® course is designed to meet the needs of wilderness trip leaders with focus on assessment, swimmer skill assessment, and prevention of emergencies in remote settings.

Wilderness Lifeguard Instructor Training
When: September 13 – 14
Where: Landmark Learning, Cullowhee, NC
After satisfactory completion of the Wilderness StarGuard® program, participants may choose to take this additional two-day training to become an Instructor candidate of the Wilderness Starguard ® program.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Updates

The American Red Cross announces newly updated courses that include the latest science in first aid, CPR, and emergency cardiovascular care.
