Are you due for an Accreditation Visit in 2012?

There have been a lot of questions about the revisions to the Accreditation Standards. The following highlights key information.

Overview

Several years ago the American Camp Association, at the national level, developed a task force to review all standards in an effort to identify redundant standards, as well as to determine which standards might need to be updated. This task force reviewed, revised and, at times, re-wrote and reformatted the current standards for improved clarity. The updated standards will be implemented at your next accreditation visit beginning this summer, 2012. If you were visited in 2010 or 2011 you do not need to update until your next scheduled accreditation visit.

Accreditation Process Guides

There is a new edition of the Accreditation Process Guide (APG). The only camps that will be required to use the new APG in 2012 will be camps being visited in 2012. The books have been mailed to each camp that is due for a visit this coming summer.

Camps with accreditation visits in 2013 and 2014 and visitors will receive their guide when they attend a training session.

Standards Courses for Camps and Visitors

Due to the updated standards, ALL camps being accredited in 2012 need to attend a Standards Update or Standards Course and ALL visitors need an update. Courses in our section are as follows:

  • Friday, February 3rd at Camp Stella Maris
  • Saturday, February 4th at Camp Stella Maris
  • Saturday, March 3rd in Buffalo
  • March 30 – 31 in Syracuse area (including Associate Visitor Course)

The Standards Course: Purpose is to prepare camp directors and administrators for their accreditation visits and to serve as an introduction to the standards program for persons interested in becoming visitors.

Standards/Visitor Update or Refresher Course: Purpose is to update currently trained standards personnel and/or camp directors on changes in standards and procedures as a result of a standards revision.

Associate Visitor Course: Purpose is to prepare persons to serve as associate visitors in the standards program. Participants must have attended the Standards Course, if necessary, a Standards Update Course prior to attending the Associate Visitor Course. This will only be offered at the March 30/31 training.
