With the current hiring crisis happening, what is it that our employees need from us that we aren't giving them?  It may be we are not being empathetic towards our staff. They are looking for empathetic leaders. A person leading with empathy is sensitive to overworked employees, interested in their lives, willing to help with their problems, and compassionate when they share their troubles.  Why is this so hard to do?  Is there an ROI on being empathetic towards your staff?  Learn why leading with empathy in today's changing work environment is necessary.

Healthy Touch for Children & Youth and Bystanders Protecting Children from Boundary Violations

Bjorn Waldron & Lee Reams of NCG Insurance

In this session, attendees will learn how to be an active bystander in child sexual abuse prevention and response. Attendees will receive examples of boundary violations and inappropriate behaviors, and how they can make spontaneous and planned interventions that reinforce boundaries and protect children. This session builds on the education provided in Stewards of Children®, Darkness to Light’s evidence-informed training on preventing, recognizing, and reacting responsibly to child sexual abuse.


Demystifying, Prioritizing, & Accelerating Relational Sales with Sam Roberts

The definition of insanity is doing the same things and expecting different outcomes. In order to successfully move through these turbulent times as people, teams, and organizations, we have to do things differently. We need to collectively demystify the word “sales” and de-escalate the emotions around classic selling, so that we can reframe the terms of engagement, recruitment, and stewardship. Camp professionals are extremely well suited to adapting toward this approach. Our core strengths and skillsets include empathy, altruism, compassion, & growth mindset--all of which are key components of transformational relational sales. We need to lean in, shift our mindframe, and implement relational sales as a priority in order to sustain and grow our organizations moving forward.

Equity: The Glue to Staff Training

Many of us have included a DEIJ (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice) workshop in our Staff Training for years, but what if our DEIJ Training wasn’t just it’s own workshop and was instead the central focus of our entire training week? How can we frame everything from CPR Training to the daily schedule to behavior management techniques with an equity lens? Our strategy does not require one person or group of people to have all the answers- it trains your staff and leadership to recognize barriers and inequities by learning to ask the right questions, then coming to a solution that suits your camp together.

While many of our campers that have special needs can find success with simple accommodations, some need more. So what do you do when your counselor comes to you and says, "I've tried everything!" Perhaps his camper is eloping (running away), or responding to frustration by hitting other campers, or maybe throwing tantrums, or perhaps being defiant ... or if the counselor is really unlucky, maybe all of the above! This was not what camp looked like on the counselor brochure that you sent him ... so now what? Let's talk strategies, explore tools, and discuss language that you can give your staff to help them better support the needs of campers.
