The Risk Management for Outdoor Programs course by Viristar provides camps and related organizations with a comprehensive, detailed training on best practices for managing risks at camp and similar trip, travel, and adventure programs. The 40-hour training takes place online, spread over four weeks. The academically rigorous course includes weekly video-conference calls, generally 90 minutes each, with independent study and small group work in between. A 200-page outdoor safety textbook is included. Topics include the science of incident causation, safety standards, emergency management, regulations, risk assessments, legal principles, documentation, media relations, accreditation, and much more. Learner Outcomes:

  1. Participants will understand the most current theories and models for managing risks

  2. Participants will understand how to apply that information to their camp context

  3. Participants will outline a risk management plan and create a safety improvement plan for their camp

Evaluation Process:

  1. The course has weekly quizzes and a final written examination. Participants must pass each quiz and the final exam with a grade of 80 percent or better. 

  2. Participants are also evaluated on their completion of weekly assignments and in-class participation.
