Gear up for summer by attending the Great Rivers Spring Gathering!  The morning will be spent learning how to build communities within your program, led by Toolbox Trainer, David Whitaker. This hour and half presentation is hands on and active! Building Community, developed by the David P. Weikart Center for Youth Program Quality, focuses on using games to foster community among youth. You will walk away with new name games, icebreakers, energizers, team builders, and diversity activities.

After enjoying a morning of fun and learning, join us for lunch and network with other youth development professionals. There will be an optional tour of the host facility, Wildwood Outdoor Education Center, following lunch. Don’t miss this opportunity to connect with others before the busy summer season is here!

Building Community, developed by the David P. Weikart Center for Youth Program Quality, focuses on using games to foster community among youth. This active, hands-on workshop gives participants the chance to learn and lead name games, icebreakers, energizers, team builders, and diversity activities.

Dave Whitaker

Dave Whitaker’s first job with youth was at a YMCA day camp in the summer of 1987. Since then, he has worked with infants through middle-schoolers in school, church, center, and recreation-based facilities. In 1998, he formed Toolbox Training to provide workshops, resources, and consulting to afterschool workers and child care providers. He has written more than a dozen books on topics such as multiple intelligences, games, and transition activities. He has delivered hundreds of workshops at the national, state, and local levels and is a certified Youth Works Methods trainer for the David P. Weikart Center for Youth Program Quality. He has a Master in Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication.

Wildwood Outdoor Education Center 

Wildwood Outdoor Education Center brings kids outside to learn and grow together, transforming summer into a season of learning, youth development, and outdoor adventure for low-income Kansas City area youth,  Wildwood’s 150 acre site has and continues to be the perfect setting for changing lives and building relationships through camping, team-building, environmental exploration and friendship-making. 

Educational Endorsement                                                               

The Spring Gathering has been endorsed by the American Camp Association.  Educational Endorsement means that the program has been reviewed by a qualified panel to verify the goals, learner outcomes, presenter qualifications, and evaluation requirements are relevant for this educational program. Participants may earn up to 1.5 continuing education credits (CECs) for this endorsed program.
