Future of American Red Cross Small Craft Safety Course To Be Determined

August 12, 2019

We have learned the American Red Cross (ARC) will be discontinuing its Small Craft Safety program.

The following statement appeared in ARC's July newsletter:

“The American Red Cross Small Craft Safety program will be retired on August 31, 2019. Over the years, we have continued to see a decline in program enrollment and utilization. After August 31, customers will no longer be able to submit course records for any Small Craft Safety course. All current instructor certifications will be updated to reflect that the program has been discontinued. The Red Cross will still recognize any basic-level certification until the expiration date listed on the card. The program materials will continue to be available on Instructor’s Corner for those that wish to download and retain a copy. We would like to encourage any customers that still need training in small craft safety to contact the American Canoe Association or America’s Boating Club.”

The basic-level certification is valid for two years. We have received several inquiries regarding the future of this certification program and are in communication with various boating organizations.  Updates will be provided as we learn more about the operation of the Small Craft Safety program.
