ACA Webinar: Growing “The Camp Experience”: Building Year-Round Educational Relationships with Public and Independent Schools

Session Description

Many camps and other informal youth programs are interested in developing relationships with public and independent schools to broaden educational programs for youth. Getting started can be a challenge! This session will provide an overview of establishing and cultivating educational relationships with schools with a sharing of curriculum models and schedules.

By the end of the session participants will be familiar with the “No Child Left Inside Act” and implications for camp-school partnerships, curriculum models and education terminology, and strategies for effectively building a year-round camp program with recommendations for transportation, food service, and related areas.

Presenter Bio

Tony Oyenarte is the Director of Camp Crystal Lake, a year-round outdoor education center that is owned and operated by the School Board of Alachua County. Tony and his staff at Camp Crystal Lake have the opportunity to work with over 6800 students annually from the Alachua County area. The summer season is busy with a residential summer camp and adventure program. Tony has spoken at several regional and national conferences on the value of year-round camping and the partnerships between schools and camps. The centerpiece of his speeches has included the importance of connecting the school year program and the summer camp experience, thus strengthening both. Tony has been very involved with the American Camp Association. Responsibilities have included: Past-President of the Southeast Section, Florida District Chair, and a current member of the National Transition Team. Prior to being the Director at Camp Crystal Lake, Tony was a high school Math and Science teacher at Gainesville High School in Gainesville, Florida. Tony has dedicated his professional career to promoting the value of the outdoor experience. Tony is married to Stacie and is the proud father of Michael (8) and Max (4).
