How to Abuse-Proof Your Camp: Procedures for Preventing Child Sexual Abuse

In the business of youth development, every camp faces the risk of child sexual abuse. You can keep your campers safe from abuse by implementing new protocols. Presenter Bio(s)

Josh Heimowitz is the Program Director for camps and Jewish Community Center programs for The Redwoods Group. Prior to joining Redwoods in 2011, Josh was the Executive Director for the YMCA of Honolulu, where he oversaw all operations and management for Camp H.R. Erdman branch. Josh has worked in various camp leadership positions for the YMCA since 1995. He holds a BS in physical education / sports management from Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania.


Cindy McElhinney is the Director of Programs at Darkness to Light. Previously Ms. McElhinney spent 14 years working in the the technology field as a Customer Support Manager and Product Manager at Blackbaud, a provider of software for nonprofits. Ms. McElhinney is a graduate of Hofstra University.

Joel Haber ( is the author of internationally acclaimed, Bullyproof Your Child for Life. Dr. Haber is a Clinical Psychologist and nationally recognized parenting expert who has dedicated more that 20 years to the prevention of abusive behaviors in children and adults. He has been a speaker and webinar leader for the Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention and has been an invited participant at events hosted by the Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention.  He is a leading expert for the LG Text Education Council, an advisory council, assembled by LG Mobile Phones.  The council members provide useful information on a variety of subjects and offer guidance to effectively handle issues concerning cyberbullying and mobile phone misuse. Dr. Haber is also the official bullying consultant to the American Camp Association, helping to write the standards for bully prevention and safety for all accredited summer camps under ACA.

Gareth Hedges is Associate General Counsel for The Redwoods Group. Gareth worked for six years as a Risk Management Specialist for Redwoods, focusing on aquatic safety, child abuse prevention and contractual risk management. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 2003 with a degree in Public Policy, and received his J.D. from Albany Law School in 2009. At Redwoods, he investigates all severe abuse and aquatics claims to help the family, the employees and the community heal after a tragic loss.
