Lessons Learned from Another Year of the ACA Camp Crisis Hotline - 2018

The ACA Hotline is a year-round, twenty-four-hour-a-day service provided to any ACA camp or member who needs help in a crisis. Each year, ACA analyzes the hotline issues and provides case studies and resources to assist in crisis management, staff training, and preparation for the unexpected, providing valuable lessons every camp can learn. This webinar explores situations from the ACA Camp Crisis Hotline that arose in 2018. Learn from the experiences of other camps in crisis situations. Topics include issues related to: health/medical, personnel, business operations, abuse allegations (at home and at camp), camper behavior, and other special situations.

By the end of this webinar, participants will:

  1. Most common types of hotline calls received and trends in hotline calls.
  2. Specific emerging issues exemplified in select cases discussed.
  3. Resources for responding to crisis situations.

Presenter Bio(s)

Tori Barnes has been working in youth development for over 20 years, with experience in afterschool programming, early childhood education, day camps and resident camps. She served as a resident Camp Director for 10 years and has a strong camp background in crisis management, learning & development, and inclusive practices. Tori is currently on the staff team with the American Camp Association working on Membership and Customer Development in the Western Region.

Kim Brosnan started working for ACA in 2006. Kim has over 20 years of experience in the camping field including day, resident, and environmental education programs. Prior to ACA she taught fifth grade and worked for CYO Camping Programs with Cleveland Catholic Charities in Ohio. She is a graduate of the University of Dayton (BS in Education) and of the University of Phoenix (MBA).

Abby Burbank has been involved in the camping industry as staff, camp consultant, camp training specialist and camp director. A good deal of that experience is in residential and wilderness tripping settings. Currently working for ACA, she is a Standards Training Specialist and works closely with instructors and volunteers.

Rhonda Mickelson has worked in the camping profession over 30 years starting as a summer camp counselor, as a Program Director and onto being a Camp Director. Her experience includes the private and non-profit sector as well as day and resident camp. She served as an ACA volunteer at both the local and currently serves as the Director of Accreditation. Rhonda received her M. Ed from Colorado State University.
