Managing the Anxious and Intervening Parent

Parents today are perhaps the most conscientious, devoted and anxious in American history.  In the last twenty years college-educated mothers have doubled the amount of time they spend with their children; so have fathers (though the absolute number of hours per week is much lower than mothers).  They are helping their children with homework, coaching their children’s teams, arranging play-dates and carpooling everywhere.  These deeply invested parents are sometimes having a harder time letting go of their children and trusting in camps.  When they send their children to residential camps they need to see website photos every day; they need children to receive their emails immediately; they require more frequent reports and they often imagine they can manage their children’s homesickness at a distance.

In this webinar, Dr. Thompson will discuss parent anxiety and the very different forms it takes from the aggressive-threatening parent to the wildly anxious and un-reassurable parent.  He will offer ways to talk to parents about their hopes and fears for camps and will discuss how to set limits and boundaries for over-intrusive parents.

Through this webinar participants will:
1) Understand the nature and sources of contemporary parental anxiety.
2) Will be able to recognize the different types and needs of worried parents.
3) Will get practical help in talking with distressed parents.
