Staff Training Issue of Camping Magazine

Each year, the May/June issue of Camping Magazine is devoted to staff training.

Multicultural Eclipse Stories from the Lunar and Planetary Institute

Preparing for this summer’s solar eclipse, and looking for ways to engage your campers? Consider playing the free online multicultural eclipse stories, researched and recorded by professional storytellers Cassandra Wye and Fran Stallings at the request of the Lunar and Planetary Institute.  The Vanishing Sun: Eclipse Tales from Around the World was created to engage a variety of audiences, in preparation for the August 21 2017 Total Solar Eclipse.

Solar Eclipse Glasses for Your Campers

Google is generously distributing solar eclipse glasses to groups, based on suggestions from NASA. We would like to include a limited number of camps that will be conducting programs for the Total Solar Eclipse on August 21, 2017. We will arrange for shipments of sets of 1,000 pairs of eclipse glasses to 15 lucky camps.

Lunar and Planetary Institute Webinars - Playful Building

ACA members as well as librarians and other out-of-school time facilitators are invited to join STAR_Net and the Lunar and Planetary Institute on March 1 for two free professional development webinars on the Playful Building activities.  These hands-on activities encourage campers to experiment with materials as they collaborate on projects. Smashing Graham Crackers and Launching Rockets to Space: Opportunities Provided by ACA

The University of Utah, like many universities across the country, takes an active interest in promoting STEM fields to K–12 students.  With the explosion of STEM learning programs, it can be difficult to stand out or capture students who are bombarded by coding and robotics camps.  Camps at the U of U are always looking to engage students in new ways and to provide unique experiences.  Thanks to the American Camp Association, we will be able to do that next summer.

SkyTellersExplore the mysteries of our Universe with Sky Tellers! Ten Native American myths and legends investigate the reason for day and Night, why we have seasons, the origin of the stars and other wondrous phenomena of our night sky. Each narrative is accompanied by the story that scientists tell today.

SkyTellers is a collaborative project between the Lunar and Planetary Institute and Ms. Lynn Moroney, and was funded by the National Science Foundation. The stories are told by Native American Master Storytellers and a Native American Astronaut.
