Few summer camp activities capture a sense of possibility quite like archery. With its mix of focus, excitement and achievement, archery programs can quickly become one of the most memorable parts of a camper’s experience.

Just ask Erin Mickelberry, a former Pan American Games gold medalist whose journey into elite competition began in the most unexpected place: summer camp.

“It was a week-long camp. We did it once a day, and I just fell in love with it,” Mickelberry recalled of the moment she first picked up a bow at age 12. “As soon as my mom picked me up, I said, ‘Mom, this is the best sport in the world.’”

That single week sparked a passion that eventually carried Mickelberry onto the international stage. Her story isn’t unique. Across the country, summer camps introduce thousands of young people to archery each year — some of whom discover a lifelong sport.

For example, Nathan Jackson first tried archery in 2019 at a summer camp. What began as a fun activity soon turned into a serious pursuit, eventually helping him earn a scholarship to compete at the University of Rio Grande in Ohio.

Stories like these highlight one of archery’s greatest strengths: it is incredibly accessible. Unlike many sports, campers of different ages, body types, and athletic backgrounds can all succeed. Success doesn’t rely on speed or strength alone. Instead, archery rewards patience, focus, and consistency — skills that campers often find empowering to develop.

Why Archery Works So Well at Camp

  1. Builds confidence quickly  Archery provides immediate feedback. When a camper releases an arrow and sees it land closer to the target than their previous shot, the sense of accomplishment is instant and tangible. Even small improvements feel meaningful.
  2. Teaches focus and patience — Camp environments can be energetic and busy. Archery provides a calm counterbalance. The rhythm of drawing, aiming, and releasing teaches campers to slow down, breathe, and concentrate.
  3. Encourages personal progress  Unlike purely competitive sports, archery emphasizes self-improvement. Campers are often just as excited about beating their own score as they are about friendly competition with others.
  4. Creates memorable camp moments  There’s something magical about the first time a camper hits the target — or even the bullseye. Those moments stick with them long after summer ends.

Tips for Creating a Great Camp Archery Program

Focus on Safety and Structure

Clear range rules, consistent communication from certified instructors, proper supervision, and quality equipment create an environment where campers feel comfortable and confident.

Start Simple

Begin with basic form, short shooting distances, and large target faces. Early success helps build excitement and keeps campers engaged.

Make It Fun

Games like balloon targets, team challenges, or themed shoots can turn practice into a highlight of the day.

Celebrate Progress

Recognize improvements in shooting form, not just perfect shots. Campers who feel encouraged are more likely to return to the range again and again.

Connect Campers to the Bigger Sport

Sharing stories like those of Erin Mickelberry and Nathan Jackson helps campers see that the arrows they shoot today could be the start of their archery journey-whether in middle school or high school, into college and well beyond into adulthood.

Because sometimes, all it takes is one week at summer camp — and one arrow — to spark a lifelong passion.
