A leaked State Department message reported by Politico last week revealed there would be a temporary pause on new student visa interviews while the administration considered expanding social media screening protocols; this pause would include J visas. The story gained national traction and prompted concern across the camp community, especially among camps relying on the timely arrival of J-1 Camp Counselors and Summer Work Travel support staff for this camp season.
The American Camp Association (ACA) acted swiftly and strategically through its Government Affairs team, deeply engaging with the U.S. State Department, connecting with the White House, engaging members of Congress, as well as working in partnership with longstanding J-1 visa sponsors. Together with our advocates, the ACA Government Affairs team worked to educate all involved about the critical role J-1 participants play in the success, safety, and cultural enrichment of summer camps across the United States.
Our Advocacy Has Made A Positive Impact!
The impact of this advocacy is significant. ACA's credibility, relationships, and consistent presence in Washington, DC, have been instrumental in the movement toward resolution of this visa-processing challenge. We are hopeful that updated guidance related to social media screening protocols for J-1 applicants will be released shortly. Visa interview appointments are expected to reopen in short order, easing concerns and enabling camps to proceed with staffing. We know that every day counts at the start of the summer, and hopefully this issue will be resolved quickly.
