Building Miracles Happen: You Can Have it All

Over the years, we've spent a lot of print space talking about how to do any number of things, and mostly that's been focused on the nuts and bolts of the construction. We have not, however, spent much time talking about whole projects from beginning to end. That's mostly because they can get so complex that it's really easy to get bogged down in the details, which after all, is where most projects set their roots in success or failure long before the first nail is driven.

Evolving Risks — Employment Practices / Sexual Harassment / Unlawful Discrimination

In 2015, there was a sharp increase in the number of calls to the ACA Crisis Hotline about accommodation and inclusion of individuals, both staff and campers, who identify themselves as transgender, gender nonconforming, or gender variant.

A Translation of Norms

The dining hall area is filled with families playing Loteria (like Bingo except pictures are called out instead of numbers). Loteria is the Spanish word for lottery. The excitement builds with the anticipation of one of the 54 different images appearing on one’s own tabla, a board with a randomly created 4 x 4 grid of pictures with their corresponding name and picture. Players choose what tabla they want to play with and settle in for several rounds of conversation and adrenalin.

Multiple Intelligences and Summer Camps

Each camper and staff is different. It is one of the things camp professionals know best. We go to great lengths to make sure every camper and staff feels successful. And yet we do not always understand how to do it, or even why we should.

Imagine a Child as a Tree — Fertilize with Unstructured, Outdoor Play, and Character Development

Ask anyone who has attended a camp as a child or youth about his or her experiences and you will receive many different responses. Camp has many meanings because of the personal nature of the experience. Over the past few years, subtle culture changes have created much greater challenges for camp/outdoor specialists because the landscape of the child has changed.

Social Justice and Camp — Talking About It

The Tell-Tale Heart and Your Floors

Over the past year, we’ve become aware of some innovations that may make carpeting a more suitable and attractive alternative than it has been before. Given the heavy soiling brought in with camp foot traffic, broadloom (big rolls) carpet required an awful lot of expensive care to keep looking good. Modern commercial grade carpeting (commercial grade is key) can include fibers that are inherently “the color” of the floor. That is, instead of being dyed, the fibers themselves are blue or green or red. This almost eliminates fading from sunlight or harsh carpet cleaning chemicals.
