Join us for the second annual Business of Camp virtual event! This 3 day event will be held on Tuesday, February 27- Thursday, February 29 2024 from 12:00 pm - 4:30 pm eastern each day.

Come join us and extend invitations to your team for either a single day or all three! Day one will spotlight site and facilities, day two will center around executive leadership, and day three will culminate with a focus on food service.

Tuesday February 27: Keynote — Site & Facilities

Jackie Kaminsky

Jackie, with Brandstetter Carroll, Inc., is an invaluable senior project manager, with over 15 years of experience in Camp & Retreat Center design. She actively encourages others to be involved in the planning process and helps clients see new opportunities they may not have thought of. Ms. Kaminsky is passionate about designing outdoor spaces that create a sense of community. She is a deeply respected collaborator with key camp staff professionals, stakeholders and consultants. Her responsibilities include Master Planning, Camp Design, Landscape Architecture, Graphics, Business Development and Project Management.

Wednesday, February 28: Keynote — Executive

Melanie Herman

Melanie Lockwood Herman, Esq. has served as Executive Director of the Nonprofit Risk Management Center since 1996 and has held senior management positions in the nonprofit sector since 1987. Melanie is the principal author of more than 20 books on various risk management topics; Melanie’s most recent book is World-Class Risk Management for Nonprofits. She is a fifteen-time member of The NonProfit Times “Power and Influence Top 50.” In one NPT announcement Melanie was described as “One of the most prolific writers and lecturers on the topic of nonprofit risk,” and “the architect of the risk plans of some of the nation’s largest’ nonprofits.” Melanie earned a BA in Urban Affairs from American University (Washington, DC), and a JD from George Mason University School of Law (Arlington, VA). She is a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association and currently serves on two national nonprofit boards (American Foundation for the Blind, and the National Human Services Assembly). She is the co-chair of the AFB Board. Her prior board service includes four years on the ACA Board and a two-year term on the board of a local summer theater camp.

Thursday, February 29: Keynote — Food Service

John Cal

John Cal has more than a decade of experience in the camping industry — working as a baker, Head Cook, Head Chef, Food Service Director, and Guest Services Director in both seasonal and year round capacities. A “John of All Trades” he has also dabbled as a Dance Aerobics Instructor, Professional Ukuleleist, and has owned his own catering company. These days he works as a writer, speaker, and serves as the Chef in Residence for The Rabbit Room, an arts nonprofit based in Nashville, Tennessee. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, he studied Speech and Writing at Union College in Lincoln Nebraska, and has since called the Pacific Northwest home for nearly 20 years. A bowtie, postcard, and travel enthusiast, John is currently working on a collection of essays about the year he spent traveling the country with his Clumber Spaniel Lucy in a vintage 13’ Scamp Trailer.
