Learn from a panel of Camp Professionals who are Native American and allies will address the issue of cultural appropriation at Camp and what you can do to bring awareness and guidance to prevent cultural appropriation.  Strategies and Tools will be shared to help in the process.   

Learner outcomes:

  • To learn what is cultural appropriation 
  • To learn what steps are needed to eliminate cultural appropriation
  • How cultural appropriation can foster trauma and erasure of native people. 
  • To hear about success stories that have occurred at camps across the country regarding cultural appropriation. 

Strategies and Tools:

  • Define the concept of  “treasures and traditions” at camp. 
  • Define what is a “cultural audit?” 
  • Define the difference between Native American/Indigenous and Western “worldviews.” 
  • Build a “bridge of belonging” between Native communities and camps. 
  • Share the Native American/Indigenous People’s Task Force “Resource List.”
