Health Care Reform - Impact on Camps as Employers

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act (HCERA) were signed into law in 2009 and 2010 respectively. Included in these new “health care reform” laws was a mandate on certain large employers to provide health insurance to their employees beginning in 2015 (or pay a penalty of $2,000 per employee).

The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act (VGB) promotes the safe use of pools, spas and hot tubs. The act imposes mandatory federal requirements for suction entrapment avoidance, and it establishes a voluntary grant program for states with laws that meet certain minimum requirements as outlined in the Act. Visas for International Staff and Campers

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) establishes minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping, and child labor standards affecting full-time and part-time workers in the private sector and in Federal, State, and local governments. The Wage and Hour Division (WHD) of the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) administers and enforces the FLSA. FLSA also contains a number of exemptions that are often applicable to camp employers.
